APhA Publishes Third Edition Of The Art, Science, And Technology Of Pharmaceutical CompoundingThe American Pharmacists Association (APhA), the national professional society of pharmacists, published in March the third edition of the leading textbook on pharmaceutical compounding. The Art, Science, and Technology of Pharmaceutical Compounding is expanded substantially from the second edition, published in 2002, and covers all aspects of the specialty practice. New to this edition is a chapter each on compounding for clinical studies, compounding cosmetics, compounding with hazardous drugs, and compounding in the event of a natural disaster or terrorist attack. The new edition has been updated to reflect new United States Pharmacopeia standards related to compounding, particularly the compounding of sterile preparations. The book is authored by Loyd V. Allen Jr., PhD, the preeminent authority on compounding. He is Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Compounding, Edmond, OK, and Professor Emeritus at the College of Pharmacy, University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, OK. Allen has written more than 200 refereed publications and abstracts in the scientific and professional literature. He is a principal author of Ansel's Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms and Drug Delivery Systems, and he has written a monthly compounding column since 1988 for the trade journal U.S. Pharmacist. The book is geared to both pharmacy students taking laboratory classes and practicing pharmacists. It presents, in a logical and progressive format, all the information a student needs to understand the purpose and processes of compounding. It includes the essential information on establishing, equipping, and operating a compounding pharmacy. It discusses all aspects of good manufacturing practices for compounded medications, and it features quality control measures for all aspects of compounding. For practitioners who already compound prescription medications, the hardbound book is a ready reference featuring more than 200 sample formulations, including bases, vehicles, and ingredient-specific preparations. Each formulation lists the necessary ingredients and gives step-by-step instructions for preparing the product. The Art, Science, and Technology of Pharmaceutical Compounding, 3rd edition (ISBN 978-1-58212-110-9; hardbound; 556 pages; $69.95 [$63 for APhA member]) may be ordered online (www.pharmacist.com and click on Shop APhA) or by phone (800-878-0729). A link to a sample portion of chapter one may be found at here About the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) The American Pharmacists Association, founded in 1852 as the American Pharmaceutical Association, represents more than 60,000 practicing pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists, student pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and others interested in advancing the profession. APhA, dedicated to helping all pharmacists improve medication use and advance patient care, is the first-established and largest association of pharmacists in the United States. http://www.pharmacist.com

However, people used to shampoos and synthetic hair care products may find the switch difficult in the initial days. However, using natural hair care products is beneficial when compared to synthetic products since they have natural elements. It has been proven time and again that nature is the best healer for all illnesses. The same applies to the hair of the human body. Any amount of external intervention in the form of shampoo and cosmetic products will not promote the hair growth or regeneration from a long term perspective. All the chemical components will only aid the hair growth in the short term. In the process, they could produce a number of side effects on the human body that cannot be ridden off quickly. The only option before the persons willing to promote natural hair growth is to opt for natural products. They could be oils or organic products that do not contain any chemicals or compounds. It has been found that the shampoo and cosmetics products might actually damage the hair in the long run. For instance, long term use of shampoo can result in premature graying of the hair and even hair loss and baldness. Shampoo and cosmetic products should not be applied to the hair everyday. It will affect the quality of the hair apart from causing hair splitting. A number of companies are now engaged in the production and marketing of natural hair care products. These hair care products are made using natural components without the addition of any synthetics or chemicals. Some herbs and plants, including aloe vera are found to have properties that promote the natural growth of hair. The hair has to be nurtured with oil to promote rapid and healthy growth. The oils such as castor oil and coconut oil help the growth of the hair apart from maintenance. For instance, hair to which coconut oil is applied, is found to be healthier than the hair to which shampoo has been applied. Therefore, it is suggested that the dependence on chemical hair care products is reduced as much as possible. Though the natural hair care products are priced higher when compared to other products, it is worth applying them to the hair instead of risking hair loss. A number of herbal products are also available in the market. However, check for the authenticity of the herbal products that claim to assist hair growth. Most of the times, the herbal products contain traces of chemicals that might be harmful to hair growth. Also, avoid steroids that promote hair growth. In the long term, exposure to steroids is highly dangerous to the human body. Therefore, it is better to stick to natural products. These herbal hair care products have flooded the markets in the recent past. Exercise caution while buying the herbal hair care products. There could be instances of the herbal hair care products eventually not meeting the assurances. Therefore, check for the authenticity of the products.Source: Free Articles from ArticlesFactory.com

Although it is known that "male" hormones, in particular testosterone, drive the pathway that leads to a fetus becoming a male (including the development of the male genitalia), the cause of defects in this process is unclear. However, Michelle Welsh and colleagues at The Queen's Medical Research Institute, United Kingdom, have now determined that in rats, the "male" hormones drive the decision to become a male during a window of time before the male genitalia develop. During this period of time, blocking the action of "male" hormones led to cryptorchidism and hypospadias, and these defects were associated with a decrease in the distance between the anus and the genitalia (AGD). Based on the timing in rats, the authors believe that the equivalent window in humans is likely to be 8 -14 weeks of gestation. Furthermore, they suggest that measuring AGD in neonatal humans could provide a noninvasive method to predict neonatal and adult reproductive disorders (cryptorchidism and hypospadias, and low sperm count and testicular cancer, respectively). ---------------------------- Article adapted by Medical News Today from original press release. ---------------------------- TITLE: Identification in rats of a programming window for reproductive tract masculinization, disruption of which leads to hypospadias and cryptorchidism AUTHOR CONTACT: Michelle Welsh The Queen's Medical Research Institute, Edinburgh, United Kingdom. You can have a free body detox by following any of the simple guidelines listed below. 1) Plan to devote at least a 24-hour period. The best time to try is when you have the opportunity to be alone, or at least time enough to relax at home without commitments and other interruptions. You may be more emotional or moody, so it's a good idea to limit your social activities as much as possible during this period. 2) Cut coffee, tea, soda, and alcohol out of your diet. 3) Drink at least three liters of water throughout the day. 4) Eat lightly, and choose healthy foods. 5) Try dry skin brushing, a spa treatment which stimulates the lymphatic system and encourages the expulsion of toxins. Using a baby brush or other soft brush: - Brush your feet, toes and soles and then the front and back of your legs. Always brush upwards and towards the groin. - Brush your buttocks and lower back using upward strokes. Reach the best you can unless you have someone you feel comfortable with help you. - Brush your hands and arms towards your armpits. - Brush across your shoulders and down the chest towards the heart (avoid your nipples). - Brush the back of your neck with downward strokes. - Using a circular, clockwise motion, brush your abdominal and stomach area. 6) Keep a journal. 7) Perform breathing exerices. The above-listed guidelines can also be done in preparation and/or addition to a purchased body detox program.
